First Light, Checkerboard Mesa (2013)
Checkerboard Mesa, a monolith of sandstone, is fascinating because of its uncanny checkerboard pattern. It grew out of countless grains of sand in an enormous ancient sand dune that, over the eons, was fused together into solid rock. Erosion slowly but surely exposed the intricate pattern and when we happen by, we gaze upon Mother Nature’s handiwork with wonder and amazement. The mornings are cold in October as the colors of autumn emerge like a butterfly from the green of summer. And in the first light of day we are ignorant of the discomfort we may be feeling as the beauty that engulfs us fills us to overflowing.
