On the Navajo Trail (2014)
I like to watch car commercials and identify where they were filmed. “Oh yea, I know where that is.” And it’s gratifying to photograph the iconic locations in national parks and elsewhere. Call it a cliché, point out that thousands of people have photographed the same thing. I don’t care. What’s important to me is the experience of being there and seeing it through my own eyes. But it’s also gratifying to go to an iconic location and find beauty in the un-photographed. This photograph was taken on the Navajo Trail below Sunset Point where dozens of people were photographing Thor’s Hammer as the sun came up. As compelling as Thor’s Hammer is, it’s easy to miss other viewpoints that convey the glory of Bryce Canyon at sunrise just as effectively if not more so. The glow of morning light on the nearby fins, the sweep across the amphitheater with its countless fins and hoodoos all the way up to Table Plateau and Point Powell – that’s what I wanted to capture and share with you.
