Bixby Bridge (2011)
For a long time Bixby Creek posed a major obstacle in building the Cabrillo Highway that runs along Pacific side of the Santa Lucia Mountains from Monterey all the way down to San Louis Obispo. The canyon it cut was deep and wide and made travel between Monterey and Big Sur a long and tortuous 3 day trip. But in 1932, that all changed when the Bixby Bridge was opened. The graceful Bixby Bridge is beautiful in all kinds of weather. But on a pristine day like this it’s even easier to fall in love with this dramatic and beautiful landscape and the wonderful road that snakes along the edge of a continent. What a magnificent way for North America to meet the sea.
