There are a ton of photographs at Cholla Garden in Joshua Tree National Park. Most of them focus on the cuddly looking cacti themselves. I’ve always been drawn to the majestic mountains that rise behind them. I’ve tried many times to capture the cacti and mountains but without success. But this past weekend I finally got what I had envisioned for so long. As I stepped out of my car I looked back across the road and saw this scene – a forest of cholla set against the ridges and ravines of Pinto Mountain. I set up the composition and shot it. I was standing in the middle of the road. Then I continued to work the composition, looking for other interesting arrangements of the cholla but it turned out that the first impression was the best.
