Canon 1Ds Mark III Upcoming Shoot

Well, no shooting with the new toy yesterday or today.  As I haven’t given up my day job yet it’s necessary to get some consulting hours in to bring home the bacon.  Besides, the client is happier when I pay some attention to them.  However, the RRS L bracket came today.  So I’ll be able to attach the camera to the tripod without having to use the long lens – always a good thing to be able to do.

But this weekend is going to be very exciting.  First of all, it’s the 1st Annual Joshua Tree Gathering, open to anyone who owns a camera and isn’t afraid to use it.  See the post.  But I’m going to attempt a series of sunrise shots from first light to the sun fully up.  The thing that makes this interesting is I’m going to attempt to do this as  360 degree panorama.  I hope I don’t have to add HDR to the mix.  Arg!

I’ve been scouting locations for a sunrise shot and picked a location along the road down to the Pinto Basin.  No, I didn’t take a quick trip to JT (150 miles from home), I used Google Earth.  I’ve been doing more and more location scouting with Google Earth.  You can fly over your area, zoom in and drop down to ground level, then look around.  The 360 from the location I selected will provide it all – to the NE Pinto Mtn will be backlit, to the SW sunlight will creep down the peaks of the Hexi Mtns and then across the basin, to the E grand vistas and a clear shot of the sun coming up between a couple of peaks.  There’s one more detail to check out and that’s the sunrise azimuth for this Saturday.  That way I can get positioned perfectly so the sun will come up right where I want it.  Now, if there would only be a few dawn clouds to light up the sky but that may not be as the forecast is for clear skies.  So, you work with what you have.

But if it all works out it should prove to be an exciting morning.  Wish me luck.
