The days have gotten by and here’s the first posting from during the workshop. So far, we’ve covered Zabriskie Point, Mesquite Dunes and Artist’s Palette. I’ve spent way more time helping the attendees than shooting myself. And virtually no time working on images. But last night at Artist’s Palette I came away I came away with a couple of images that I’d like to share.
If you’ve been to Artist’s Palette, you now it’s all about the color. There are formations in blues, purples, reds and browns. The colors are truly amazing. You see bits and pieces of them in other formations throughout this end of the Valley but at Artist’s Palette they all come together on one place.
It is difficult to get a a good composition though. Depending on where you are standing the colors and forms are pretty chaotic. I found two compositions that I liked last night.
The first one that caught my eye was this one.
This landscape composition seems to build up to the blue area. I think it works as sell as any I’ve seen.
The next composition is a portrait orientation.
The S-curve leads the eye into the composition and up to where the colors are. I think this also works.
Both of these images were taken after the sun went behind the Panamints to the west but while the sky still have a bit of a warm glow. If they had been taken 15 minutes later they would have been bathed in the cool blue light of late twilight.
This morning we had more rain scheduled and hopefully Mosaic Canyon will be wet. That’s a fantastic place to shoot when the canyon walls are shiny with water. But you can imagine that doesn’t happen very often in the desert. So cross your fingers.
