This photograph of the surf at Partington Cove was taken Friday 2/25/11. Obviously the surf was up as a storm from earlier in the morning was clearing out.
I photographed the surf for about a half hour using a ‘normal’ exposures; that is, the fast shutter speeds that resulted from copious quantities of beautiful bright light. The waves were frozen in time.
Then I decided to try a graduated neutral density filter and get the shutter speed up to about 1/2 second. The results were exciting. Not only was the motion of the breakers captured but also the overall turbulence of the waves in this little cove. Now when I compare these long exposure images with the first ones I greatly prefer the latter.
Photography is a means of allowing us to see what our eyes cannot see and here is a beautiful example of just that.
