When I do art festivals and shows I’m often asked, “Did you manipulate that photograph?” I have several answers. The most direct is, “Yes, of course.”
Other times I’ll reply, “My photographs are what I saw, not what the camera saw.” Or if I’m feeling really wordy I’ll answer, “Let me explain it this way. I approach photography from the mindset of a painter. I want to give myself the same creative freedom of a painter.” To which the inquirer will often respond, “Oh, I get it; you’re an artist.”
To manipulate or not to manipulate. That’s not even the question. Why? Because you have to go to extremes to have a photograph that is NOT manipulated. OK, that’s a pretty bold statement. So let’s take a deeper look.

One of the things that we landscape photographers pay a lot of attention to is light. In fact, it is my belief that the study of landscape photography is a never ending study of light. And that’s a good thing because there’s so much to learn.
Now, I must confess – my analytical mind needs to break things down to help my creative mind better recognize and capitalize on great light. So get ready ‘cause here come a series of blog posts on light.
What Color Is a Cloud?
The first thing I want to look at is Color. Now, we’re all pretty familiar with red, green and blue, even cyan, magenta and yellow. I don’t want to talk about color in that way. When it comes to evaluating our own photographs we’re probably the worst ones to do so. That’s not surprising because we’re so emotionally tied up in every aspect – the subject, the feelings we had when we got the shot, the work we’ve done on it in the digital darkroom.
