General Information

The Eastern Sierra is perhaps one of the most spectacular mountain ranges in the United States.  Stretching from Mt. Whitney in the southern to Mono Lake in the north this country offers numerous 14,000 foot peaks, pristine lakes, mountain meadows, the beautiful Owens River Valley, glacier carved valleys, volcanic craters, magnificent Mono Lake, the Ancient Bristlecone Pines and much, much more.  We might even stumble across a bit of the colorful historical sites that are found in this area.

I grew up hiking in the back country and exploring the wonders of this area.  Each season clothes the mountains and valleys in their own special splendor.  The reason for choosing July is to experience the monsoon season.  Temperatures in the valley will be very warm but we'll escape to the higher elevations.

Our workshop will begin in Lone Pine to the south.  There we will be in the shadow of Mt. Whitney, at 14,196 feet above sea level, the tallest peak in the lower 48 states.  Over the next five days we will work our way north until we end up in Lee Vining.

Besides some great photography we will offer group instruction on topics related to fine art landscape photography and individual instruction on topics of interest to you.  We will also offer a print review for anyone who wishes to participate. You can bring 4 to 6 of your photographs 8X10 or larger. We will provide feedback on photographic and post processing techniques.

Schedule
Saturday, July 11: Meet in Lone Pine, Ca for dinner and a workshop overview.  Lodging in Lone Pine

Sunday, July 12:  Alabama Hills and other areas in the Lone Pine Area.  Lodging in Lone Pine.

Monday, July 13: Mt Williamson, Onion Valley and Bristlecone Pines.  Lodging in Bishop

Tuesday, July 14: Lake Sabrina, alpine meadows.  Lodging in Bishop

Wednesday, July 15: Owens River, Minarets, Devil's Post Pile.  Lodging in Lee Vining

Thursday, July 16: Mono Lake, Bodie

This itinerary may change according to weather and photographic opportunities.  However the lodging arrangements will not.
A Typical Day
A typical day will begin with a sunrise shoot.  We will arrive about 45 minutes to an hour before sunrise.  Mid-day activities consist of lectures, assignments, print reviews and/or travel.  There will also be some mid-day shooting when conditions are right.  Mid to late afternoon we'll arrive at our sunset location.  After shooting sunset we will relax, enjoy dinner, review the day's shooting and prepare for the next day of photography.

Testimonial

What attendees say they like about this workshop:

The friendly and patient attitude of the instructor, variety of good places to photograph, handouts and technical discussion.

Kit Rosenlund

... Personal attention, good discussion on "Photographer as Artist," discussions while driving, comments on picture review,....

Over the past few years, I attended several seminars, workshops and the like....  Generally there is little to no room for personal interaction and/or personal problem solving....  Not so with Ralph.... you can ask him whatever you want.  If he can help you he will.  Ralph is a problem solver and an evangelist.  He opened my eyes... and while respecting my "dislike" for Photoshop he developed a two-step process for "people like me."  Another fantastic thing about his attitude is that he respects everyone's opinion.  So, to all future workshop attendees,... if you want to be treated as a human and more importantly as a photographer who has his own opinion and way of working, sign up for a workshop with Ralph.
