First, we pride ourselves on
personal attention. Besides being
an excellent landscape photographer, Ralph is a
professional educator.
His years of teaching have given him a
different perspective on how to turn workshops
into effective learning environments.
We provide a mix of in the field and
classroom training, we give assignments
that stretch your creativity and
technical prowess and we focus on the
areas of photography you want to focus
on.
October is a wonderful time to be in
Zion. Autumn is just starting to
touch the trees. The temperatures in the
canyon floor are still temperate
although the mornings in the plateau
will be quite chilly. An early
winter storm might pass through making
for even more dramatic photography.
We will photograph some of the many
great locations in the park, such
locations as Watchman tower, the Virgin
River, Checkerboard Mesa, the Great
White Throne, the West Temples, the
Temple of Sinawava, Gateway to the
Narrows, Riverside Walk, Kolob terrace
and more. The actual locations we
photograph will be selected based on the
weather and of course the light.
Our base of operations will be in
Springdale, Utah. This community
at the south entrance to the park
provides easy access to all the
locations where we will be shooting.
A typical day will start with a
sunrise and morning shoot in the park.
In the middle of the day we will take
time for photo reviews and more
structured lessons. The
photo reviews are an important part of
the learning experience as they provide
immediate feedback on your work.
We will leave for the afternoon and
sunset shoot in plenty of time to catch
the best light. The days are long,
filled with activities and very
rewarding.
I'm often asked if I'll be shooting
when we're in the field. My first
priority is to make sure each
participant is ready to go. I'll
be looking over your shoulder checking
composition, exposure, focus and
offering suggestions. My objective is to send
you home with technically sound images
that you'll be able to produce fine
photographs from. And then I'll
slip in a shot here and there.
I'll also set up and demonstrate
techniques like the use of graduated
neutral density filters, shooting
panoramas, HDR and the like. We like to
keep the workshop size small so that I
can give enough personal attention to
everyone that wants it.
The weather in Zion this time of year
can range anywhere from warm to quite
cool. The canyon bottom at an
elevation of 4500 feet will always be
warmer than the plateau several thousand
feet higher where the temperatures could
reach freezing at dawn. We could
also be treated to an early winter storm
passing through which would provide some
fantastic photo opportunities.
So that's a bit of an idea of what we
have to offer. Let me know if you
still have questions. If this
looks like something you're looking for
then come join us. You won't be
disappointed.
