{"id":115,"date":"2008-04-14T19:22:06","date_gmt":"2008-04-15T03:22:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/2008\/04\/14\/genuine-fractals-impressions-1\/"},"modified":"2019-11-23T19:40:23","modified_gmt":"2019-11-24T03:40:23","slug":"genuine-fractals-impressions-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/2008\/04\/14\/genuine-fractals-impressions-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Genuine Fractals Impressions #1"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Improve your photography skills, stimulate your creativity and have a fantastic time.<\/h3>\n<p>I picked up Genuine Fractals by onOne software this weekend.\u00a0 What does it do?\u00a0 It allows you to upscale your digital images.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And just what is upscaling?\u00a0 It comes down to adding pixels to your image to make it larger.\u00a0 Whenever you add pixels you have a problem.\u00a0 What color and intensity should the new pixels be?<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Normally, we would use the built-in bicubic function in Photoshop or one of its variations &#8211; bicubic sharper or bicubic smoother.\u00a0 The correct term in bicubic interpolation but we&#8217;ll just refer to it as bicubic.\u00a0 When bicubic needs to add a pixel it samples the pixels that immediately surround it, reading their color and intensity.\u00a0 Then it uses a complex mathematical algorithm to set the color and intensity of the new pixel.\u00a0 The problem with bicubic is that it tends to soften edges, causing the photograph to loose its sharpness.<\/p>\n<p>Genuine Fractals uses a different approach.\u00a0 To quote from the user guide, &#8220;[Genuine Fractals 5] starts by analyzing ever-decreasing sizes of pixel blocks in your image looking for repeating natural patterns at different sizes.\u00a0 These are known as fractals.&#8221;\u00a0 <a title=\"Fractal Definition\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fractal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">For a more thorough definition of a fractal, refer to Wikipedia<\/a>.\u00a0 To continue with the user guide, &#8220;The great thing about fractal patterns is once you find them they can be scaled to any size without loss of detail.\u00a0 This allows Genuine Fractals 5 to re-size your image over 1,000% without losing sharpness or edge detail,&#8221; or at least that&#8217;s the promise.<\/p>\n<p>So, for the next few postings over the coming days I&#8217;ll let you know just how well it performs.\u00a0 I must say the first thing I did out of the box was to prepare a 16X24&#8243; print from a 6 M pixel RAW file.\u00a0\u00a0The results were very pleasing.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the image.\u00a0 There is a lot of texture in the rocks but the door wants to be smooth.\u00a0 You\u00a0can&#8217;t compare a small JPEG like this to the actual print but it will at least give you some idea.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/streets_of_delphi_portal.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"Streets of Delphi - Portal\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Streets of Delphi &#8211; Portal<\/p>\n<p>So stay tuned as we put Genuine Fractals through its paces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bawpvc-ajax-counter\" data-id=\"115\"> (722)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Improve your photography skills, stimulate your creativity and have a fantastic time.
