{"id":1323,"date":"2010-07-28T05:32:30","date_gmt":"2010-07-28T13:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/2010\/07\/28\/photography-tutorial-getting-the-shot\/"},"modified":"2018-09-09T19:52:26","modified_gmt":"2018-09-10T03:52:26","slug":"photography-tutorial-getting-the-shot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/2010\/07\/28\/photography-tutorial-getting-the-shot\/","title":{"rendered":"Photography Tutorial &ndash; Getting the Shot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have what I think is a fun idea that can lead to an interesting discussion.\u00a0 Let me explain.<\/p>\n<p>I often think of art in general and photography in particular as involving two very important elements \u2013 creative vocabulary and interpretive decisions.\u00a0 Creative vocabulary is the knowledge, skills and techniques we use as artists and just like our verbal vocabulary, we use the \u2018words\u2019 in our creative vocabulary to express ourselves.\u00a0 As we grow as artists our creative vocabulary grows and we are able to more fully and richly communicate our thoughts and feelings.<\/p>\n<p>Interpretive decisions recognizes the fact that each of us has a unique world view and a unique thing to say.\u00a0 When creating a work of art we make numerous decisions, decisions that shape the way we interpret our subject and thereby communicate what it is we have to say about it.<\/p>\n<p>So, this leads to my fun idea.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I want to propose a situation related to photographing a particular subject and set a starting point.\u00a0 From there I invite you to share your thoughts on the decisions you would make to capturing the image.\u00a0 Let me be a bit more specific.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/A1P6721Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;\" title=\"_A1P6721-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/A1P6721Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"_A1P6721-Edit\" width=\"260\" height=\"184\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> Cologne Cathedral, Germany<\/p>\n<p>I was recently in Cologne, Germany photographing the interior of their magnificent cathedral, the K\u00f6lner Dom.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the situation.\u00a0 I shot the image above with my digital SLR with a 24-105mm f\/4L lens.\u00a0 That\u2019s an image stabilized lens.\u00a0 I did not have a tripod so I had to shoot hand held.\u00a0 The light level was very low and flash was not allowed.\u00a0 The focal length for the image was 24mm.<\/p>\n<p>So here\u2019s the challenge.\u00a0 Composition aside, what techniques would you use and what decisions would you make regarding the configuration of your camera (exposure, etc.) that lead up to the point where you press the shutter?\u00a0 In other words, from the point you decide you want to capture this particular image to the point you press the shutter, what\u2019s going through your head?\u00a0 Granted, there are a lot of interpretive decisions waiting to be made during the post processing.
