{"id":2275,"date":"2011-12-08T20:41:17","date_gmt":"2011-12-09T04:41:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/?p=2275"},"modified":"2012-01-10T20:34:33","modified_gmt":"2012-01-11T04:34:33","slug":"alpenglow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/2011\/12\/08\/alpenglow\/","title":{"rendered":"Alpenglow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Photography is all about light.\u00a0 In nature photography we study the weather, time of day and time of year to learn all we can about light.\u00a0 And the more diligently we study light the more it pays off.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite types of light is alpenglow.\u00a0 There is a bit of confusion about what it is.\u00a0 Many people think it\u2019s the sunlight shining on the mountain peaks during sunset, after the valleys below are in shadow.\u00a0 And while this is beautiful, that\u2019s not it.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Alpenglow occurs after the sun slips below the horizon.\u00a0 Immediately after sunset the color on the mountain goes flat and lifeless.\u00a0 But give it a few minutes and the magic starts.\u00a0 It looks like it\u2019s glowing from within.\u00a0 And this can go on for some time.<\/p>\n<p>Alpenglow doesn\u2019t take place just at sunset.\u00a0 It also occurs at sunrise while the sun is still below the horizon.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the reasons we like to arrive at our sunrise location at least 45 minutes early.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to create a video that shows this effect.\u00a0 So not long ago I was at Cedar Breaks National Monument in Utah.\u00a0 It\u2019s very much like Bryce Canyon, a beautiful amphitheater with red sandstone fins and hoodoos.\u00a0 The big difference is it faces to the west, the opposite direction from Bryce, making it an ideal sunset location.<\/p>\n<p>I set up my camera just as sunset was in full swing.\u00a0 The last rays of the sun were still shining on the cliff faces.\u00a0 I did some time laps photography and assembled the images into a short video.\u00a0 You\u2019ll see the shadows creeping up and then the light in the whole amphitheater will go flat.\u00a0 But keep watching because the alpenglow will begin.\u00a0 And the glow will continue until night claims the scene.<\/p>\n<div id=\"scid:5737277B-5D6D-4f48-ABFC-DD9C333F4C5D:334f2b15-0231-4964-bd5f-d11dc0c1b733\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\" style=\"width: 448px;
