Every time I do a show I get asked multiple times if my photographs are manipulated.\u00a0 My answer is always, \u2018Yes, of course.\u2019\u00a0 The hidden expectation is that photographs are supposed to be accurate depictions of the scene that is photographed.\u00a0 This expectation is not new.\u00a0 And any photographer that seeks to make art rather than documentation must face this question.<\/p>\n

Take Ansel Adams for instance\u2026.<\/p>\n

The above iconic Ansel Adams photograph is titled Winter Sunrise.\u00a0 It is of Mt Whitney and Lone Pine Peak above the Alabama Hills with Adams\u2019 characteristic dramatic lighting.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s an interesting excerpt regarding this photograph from his book, \u201cExamples, The Making of 40 Photographs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe enterprising youth of the Lone Pine High School had climbed the rocky slopes of the Alabama Hills and whitewashed a huge white L P for the world to see.\u00a0 It is a hideous and insulting scar on one of the great vista of our land, and shows in every photograph made of the area.\u00a0 I ruthlessly removed what I could of the L P from the negative (in the left-hand hill), and have always spotted out any remaining trace in the print.\u00a0 I have been criticized by some for doing this, but I am not enough of a purist to perpetuate the scar and thereby destroy \u2013 for me, at least \u2013 the extraordinary beauty and perfection of this scene.\u201d<\/p>\n

It seems the debate raged in Adams\u2019 day and continues today.\u00a0 I guess you know where I stand.\u00a0 Oh, and for those \u2018purists\u2019 that revere Adams, if they only knew.<\/p>\n
