{"id":377,"date":"2009-03-27T22:20:49","date_gmt":"2009-03-28T06:20:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/?p=377"},"modified":"2019-11-20T10:35:40","modified_gmt":"2019-11-20T18:35:40","slug":"racetrack-playa-death-valley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/2009\/03\/27\/racetrack-playa-death-valley\/","title":{"rendered":"Racetrack Playa, Death Valley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was fortunate to visit the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley November of last year.\u00a0 This is where rocks mysteriously slide around, leaving tracks in their wake.\u00a0 Many slide for hundreds of feet and more.\u00a0 Some move with seeming purpose in pretty much a straight line while others meander about, changing directions on a seeming whim.<\/p>\n<p>The journies of these rocks are illustrated by the following photographs.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 288px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/death-valley-gallery\/content\/wanderer_2008_large.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"The Wanderer\" src=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/img\/california_deserts\/wanderer_2008.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Wanderer, Racetrack Playa, Death Valley, CA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Or consider the meanderings of these two rocks.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/death-valley-gallery\/content\/traffic_jam_2008_large.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Traffic Jam\" src=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/img\/california_deserts\/traffic_jam_2008.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Traffic Jam, Racetrack Playa, Death Valley, CA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you trace back the path of the rock on the right you will be amazed.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a joy to wander over the playa for literally miles in search of these often whimsical rocks.\u00a0 However, when I was last out there I saw some very disturbing signs of greed and total disregard for others and the wonders of our earth.\u00a0 Scores of tracks had no rocks &#8211; at either end.\u00a0 People were carting them off.\u00a0 You might not be surprised to see one or two tracks without the rocks that made them.\u00a0 But to see scores was both upsetting and heart breaking.\u00a0 And to top it off, there were car tracks on the playa.\u00a0 Some idiots drove their vehicle out there for, what could only be to make off with even more rocks.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s callous ignorance like this that makes one feel the need even more urgently to redouble our efforts to preserve treasures like these.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve said in this blog before that it just takes one.\u00a0 You only cut a virgin forest once, build a highway through a pristine wilderness area once, wipe out a species once, remove racetrack rocks once and they are gone forever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bawpvc-ajax-counter\" data-id=\"377\"> (1192)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was fortunate to visit the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley November of last year.\u00a0 This is where rocks mysteriously slide around, leaving tracks in their wake.\u00a0 Many slide for hundreds of feet and more.\u00a0 Some move with seeming purpose in pretty much a straight line while others meander about, changing directions on a seeming &hellip;
