{"id":4755,"date":"2020-03-23T11:22:51","date_gmt":"2020-03-23T19:22:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/?p=4755"},"modified":"2020-03-23T11:28:12","modified_gmt":"2020-03-23T19:28:12","slug":"gestalt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/2020\/03\/23\/gestalt\/","title":{"rendered":"Gestalt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">From time to time the term \u2018Gestalt\u2019 has come up in articles and classes on composition.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I never quite grasped the concept.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I thought Gestalt is an approach some psychologists use in their counseling. And to make matters even more confusing, the origin of the term didn\u2019t help.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It comes from the German word that means \u2018shape.\u2019<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It just wasn\u2019t sinking in.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Until recently\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">The concept started to make sense as I was preparing the Mastering Landscape Photography class for the Joshua Tree National Park Desert Institute here in California.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In this course I take a deep dive into light and composition.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ve been studying the \u2018rules\u2019 of composition for many years now and the authors tend to make broad generalizations on the effect they have on the viewers.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>More recently I studied the impact colors have, not from the perspective of visual arts but rather from the studies performed by researchers in psychology.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Through their studies, the researchers found that the colors they studied, generally prime colors, can have either a positive or negative effect on their subjects.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>And the effect depended on many factors but based on these factors they were consistent.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>That got me thinking.<\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Every source that I checked on diagonal lines made the same assertion.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They create a sense of motion and energy in the viewer.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s pretty much universally true.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>And where there\u2019s motion, there is a direction.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The generally accepted rule is that diagonal lines that go from the upper left to the lower right have a downward direction; that is, they are descending.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The opposite is true for lines that go from the lower left to the upper right.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They are ascending.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; padding: 0px; line-height: normal;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"mso-no-proof: yes;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/clip_image002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; line-height: normal;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"mso-no-proof: yes;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/clip_image004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"clip_image004\" src=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/clip_image004_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"clip_image004\" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">In these examples where the lines are isolated, I think you would agree with me that this is true.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>This is a reliable response in virtually everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">But incorporate diagonal lines within the context of an image and these rules become ambiguous. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>For example, take this image of a section of the wall at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/thingstodo\/visit-ubehebe-crater.htm\">Ubehebe Crater<\/a> in Death Valley National Park, a crater a half a mile wide and 600 feet deep that was created by an explosion of steam of all things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"mso-no-proof: yes;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/clip_image006.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"margin: 15px 30px; border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"clip_image006\" src=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/clip_image006_thumb.png\" alt=\"clip_image006\" width=\"382\" height=\"542\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">This vignette has very strong diagonal lines going from lower left to upper right.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>And yet many people (but not all that I\u2019ve asked) perceive these as descending diagonal lines.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This downward energy is created from many other visual clues that direct the energy downward.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The two dark areas frame the central area forcing it to converge toward the bottom, pointing in that direction.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The influence of these three elements is stronger than the ascending diagonal line rule.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Therefore, the effect of the image arises from the interaction of all the elements within the image.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>And these interactions can redefine the roles individual elements play.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Taken as a whole, this image is a contradiction to the generally accept view that diagonal lines from lower left to upper right have an upward motion and energy.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not always.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">It\u2019s worth mentioning that not everyone sees the energy as moving downward in this image.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s very interesting to study what our brains do when they receive these images from the optic nerves.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Much of the processing the brain does produces near-universal result. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>But the experiences and memories of the individual who is viewing the image can sometimes become the more dominant factor in the response.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hence, we get our own unique individuality and potential variations in the responses from one person to another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Let\u2019s look at an example where the \u2018rules\u2019 apply.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This next image is from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/thingstodo\/drive-twenty-mule-team-canyon.htm\">20 Mule Team Canyon<\/a>, again in Death Valley.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the bottom of the image there is a streambed t that moves from upper left to lower right.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Take a look.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"mso-no-proof: yes;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/clip_image008.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"clip_image008\" src=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/clip_image008_thumb.png\" alt=\"clip_image008\" width=\"842\" height=\"470\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">It appears to be moving downhill from left to right.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not only does the \u2018rule\u2019 apply but we also know from our experiences that water flows downhill which supports the impression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">An exception to the descending rule is found in Death Valley\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/deva\/learn\/historyculture\/pete-aguereberry.htm\">Aguereberry Point<\/a>.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This rock outcrop is the iconic representation of this amazing viewpoint, 6000+ feet above the valley below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"mso-no-proof: yes;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/clip_image010.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"clip_image010\" src=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/clip_image010_thumb.png\" alt=\"clip_image010\" width=\"542\" height=\"456\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Although the strong diagonal lines go from upper left to lower right, the rock is seen as bursting out of the ground with great energy.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our brains subconsciously see that both rocks are pointed on the end which reinforces the direction of travel, overriding the \u2018rule\u2019 in this case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">What is it that causes some diagonal lines to follow the \u2018rule\u2019 and others to violate it?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s the context within which the diagonal lines are found.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Other elements may counteract the diagonal lines and carry a greater influence.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Add to that the experiences and memories of the viewer and the \u2018rule\u2019 can be even more effectively overruled.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is the image in its entirety that determines its mood.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>And that\u2019s gestalt.<\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">This can be summarized in a common refrain; \u201cThe whole is greater than the sum of its parts.\u201d It is all the elements of an image, the subject, composition, light, sharpness, tonality\u2013 that come together to create the expressiveness of the image, the impression it creates, the message that it carries.<\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">With this in mind, take a look at this image from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.antelopecanyon.com\/\">Antelope Canyon<\/a> near Page, Arizona.<\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"mso-no-proof: yes;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/clip_image012.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 15px 30px; padding: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"clip_image012\" src=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/clip_image012_thumb.png\" alt=\"clip_image012\" width=\"382\" height=\"542\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Most photography books and articles you read about the color red will extol its vibrant, inviting, attention grabbing, exhilarating qualities.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They suggest that red has a bright, uplifting effect on most people.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>But this image is a clear exception.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>With all the swirling turmoil, the red takes on a hellish glow as if the rocks were red hot.<\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 8pt; padding: 0px; line-height: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">The message I want to leave with you is not to ignore the \u2018rules\u2019 of composition.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>On the contrary, they form the foundation upon which we build our images.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s important to be aware of lines and thirds and layers and the many compositional elements at our disposal and to use them effectively.
