{"id":528,"date":"2009-09-02T21:39:14","date_gmt":"2009-09-03T05:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/?p=528"},"modified":"2019-11-18T20:12:32","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T04:12:32","slug":"brainstorming-in-photography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/2009\/09\/02\/brainstorming-in-photography\/","title":{"rendered":"Brainstorming in Photography"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever done a brainstorming session?\u00a0 It&#8217;s great for generating fresh, out-of-the-box ideas.\u00a0 It&#8217;s used when you want to find a solution.\u00a0 You can do it by yourself or with a group but the basic rule is you write down everything that comes into your mind.\u00a0 Nothing gets discussed or edited or rejected.\u00a0 No\u00a0 matter how outrageous the thought, it gets recorded.\u00a0 It&#8217;s only when you run out of ideas that you go back over the\u00a0 list and discuss the various ideas, eventually zeroing in on the one or ones you want to pursue.<\/p>\n<p>Well, I&#8217;ve recently started using a brainstorming technique\u00a0in Lightroom.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the same concept &#8211; develop as many versions of the photograph with no evaluation, no criticism, no\u00a0limits.\u00a0 Just try as many things as you can think of.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how\u00a0it works.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Select a RAW image you want to work on.\u00a0 I\u00a0like to give it 1 star at that point.\u00a0 Create a virtual copy and go to town.\u00a0 Make some changes and see where they take you.\u00a0 Then repeat the process.\u00a0 Make another virtual copy and try a different series of changes.\u00a0 Keep on making virtual copies and applying different approaches until you can&#8217;t think of anything else to try with that image.<\/p>\n<p>Now I deviate from the pure brainstorming technique in this way.\u00a0 If I find a version that I really like I give it another star.\u00a0 Then I continue with more virtual\u00a0 copies and more ideas.<\/p>\n<p>You might be asking yourself how you can make different changes with the same image.\u00a0 Well, here are a few ideas.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Try different color balances.\u00a0 Make a warm version.\u00a0 Then try a cool version.\u00a0 Then try one that has a neutral color\u00a0 balance.<\/li>\n<li>Try different ways to adjust the\u00a0 image&#8217;s luminance.\u00a0 For\u00a0 example, try\u00a0Exposure.\u00a0 Then on another version try Brightness.\u00a0 On yet another version adjust luminance of specific colors.<\/li>\n<li>Try different ways of controlling shadow and highlight clipping.\u00a0 Use Recovery for highlight clipping.\u00a0 Then try reducing the exposure.\u00a0 Or try Fill for black clipping.\u00a0 Then increasing brightness.<\/li>\n<li>Use different techniques to adjust contrast.\u00a0 Use the Contrast control.\u00a0 Then use Brightness and Black.\u00a0 Or Exposure and Black.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t forget playing with saturation.\u00a0 And hue too.<\/li>\n<li>Now, mix and match all of these\u00a0 techniques.\u00a0 The possibilities are virtually endless.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Many of the versions will be very similar to each other but use this technique and you&#8217;ll come up with some very pleasant surprised.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Ralph-Nordstrom-Photography\/112254382772\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Join me on Facebook.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/workshops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Join me on a workshop.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Enjoy my photography gallery.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"bawpvc-ajax-counter\" data-id=\"528\"> (1456)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever done a brainstorming session?\u00a0 It&#8217;s great for generating fresh, out-of-the-box ideas.\u00a0 It&#8217;s used when you want to find a solution.\u00a0 You can do it by yourself or with a group but the basic rule is you write down everything that comes into your mind.\u00a0 Nothing gets discussed or edited or rejected.\u00a0 No\u00a0 &hellip;
