{"id":891,"date":"2009-12-29T10:56:09","date_gmt":"2009-12-29T18:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/2009\/12\/29\/hdr-tip-3\/"},"modified":"2009-12-29T10:58:03","modified_gmt":"2009-12-29T18:58:03","slug":"hdr-tip-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/2009\/12\/29\/hdr-tip-3\/","title":{"rendered":"HDR Tip #3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the previous tip we discussed adjustments you want to make to your images in Lightroom to prepare them for the HDR process to come.<\/p>\n<p>This next tips covers the step where we get the images out of Lightroom.<\/p>\n<p>Lightroom is a RAW image converter (among other things).\u00a0 It does RAW image conversions extremely well.\u00a0 Other great RAW image converters are available to us \u2013 Capture One, Aperture, and DxO to name a just few.\u00a0 These are all highly sophisticated products that do an extraordinary job.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Photomatix also has a built in RAW image converter.\u00a0 You can import RAW files into Photomatix and it will process them.\u00a0 However, Photomatix\u2019s strength is in tone mapping and fusion, not RAW image conversion.\u00a0 So this tip is one that when you understand this, it\u2019s a no brainer.<\/p>\n<p>Never import RAW images into Photomatix.\u00a0 Always convert your\u00a0 RAW images to TIFF files in your RAW image converter and import the TIFF files into Photomatix.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the fact that you get far better RAW image conversion this way, there is another benefit.\u00a0 All the adjustments you made to Blacks and Point Curves in the last tip are incorporated into the TIFF file.\u00a0 They\u00a0 would be lost if you imported the RAW files into Photomatix.<\/p>\n<p>So here\u2019s how to do this.\u00a0 Select the images you want to include.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose the Export function, either from the Library mode screen or from the context menu when you right click.<\/li>\n<li>In the Export dialog, select the folder you want to export the files to.\u00a0 I like to create an HDR folder under the folder that contained the RAW image\u00a0 files.\u00a0 I\u2019d also suggest you add the new files to the Lightroom catalog.<\/li>\n<li>I like to keep the same file names.<\/li>\n<li>Select the TIFF format with no compression, ProPhoto RGB color space and 16 bits for your bit depth.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t resize the image.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t sharpen the image.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t add any metadata.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here\u2019s a typical screen shot.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ralphnordstromphotography.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/lightrjoom_settings_export.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px;
